December 2008 TALUG Meeting
Note: because of the Thanksgiving holiday and the dreaded "Black Friday" weekend, November's meeting will be moved to December instead.
- Where:
- University of Toledo, North Engineering building - Room 1026
- Day:
- Saturday, December 13th, 2008
- Time:
- 2:00 PM
- Topic:
- General Linux Q&A + Installfest
The December meeting will not feature a presentation, but instead will be a general Linux users get-together. Come and meet fellow Linux users from around the Toledo area! We will also be doing a small installfest, so if you have a laptop or desktop you'd like to install Linux onto, BYOM (bring your own machine.)
We have a few people who will be helping with installs, but we are looking for a few more, so if you'd like to help out, please let us know. Below is the list of distributions and who will be handling them:
Ubuntu: Scott Vargovich, Steven Cook
Debian: Scott Vargovich
Mint: Scott Vargovich, Steven Cook
Fedora: James Malleroy
Slackware: Jeremiah Holt
Gentoo: Chris Volny
DSL: Abdulmajed Dakkak
Linux distribution CDs will also be provided.
The meeting wasn't all that well attended because we didn't get flyers out. We had 2 newbies show up. One who had a pretty cool looking micro-PC that he wanted to install Linux on, but he needed a different storage card for it. He had it on order, but hadn't received it yet. I (your humble Secretary) am going to help him put DSL on it after said card is delivered. The other one came with a laptop with FreeBSD on it. He got some help with an X problem that had been plaguing him. A couple of the CDs were taken. James Helton (openSUSE guy) brought 10 CDs with pdf files of different Linux books on them and handed a few of them out. I have some left over. Anybody who wants them, please contact me off the list. We had a great geek-out session and Craig Seeley went into Math Teacher mode with a few of us when he found an differential equation on the white board that was poorly solved - and showed me I need to brush up on my Calculus. 5 of us - including Andy Yang - one of the newbies, went over to IPOH for dinner. It was a great day of fun, fellowship and geeking out. I personally had a great time - despite the lack of newbies showing up.
I would like to add a personal thank you to all of the installers that stepped forward to help out with the installfest. I apologize that it wasn't more publicized.
