Meeting Notes
It was a successful "Intro to Linux" meeting. There were at least 8 new faces in attendance, eager to learn about GNU/Linux and UNIX. First we distributed multiple (K/Ed)Ubuntu CDs and handouts (command lists, vi/emacs cheat sheets, etc.). Abdul started the presentation, covering the history of UNIX and GNU and Linux, moving on to distributions and command-line basics. I (Jason) played the part of backup vocalist, interjecting from time to time. I took over when we got to the command-line text editors (ViM, XEmacs, and nano) and continued with the rest of the command-line coverage and into GUI stuff with Abdul on backup vocals... :-) Four brave souls kept it going with their attention and astute questions until after 10:00pm. We even covered 'gcc' and 'make'. At the very end, Abdul demonstrated some eye candy with the whole Xgl/Compiz thing.
There were good questions about where to find out more, which desktop to use, what can/can't Linux do, how to install it, etc. I think we did a decent job answering questions. One website to remember for sure is this one:
Check out the links in the column on the left, especially the following:
- Events/Minutes - for content of prior meetings and events, often including presentations and additional materials
- Documentation - for links to helpful sites
- Software - for places to find software for GNU/Linux
Abdul put a lot of effort into organizing this meeting. From publicity to room reservation and getting parking permits and preparing the presentation and handouts. Thanks to Abdul for a job well done!
